The gang also set fire to the holy pages before dumping them in the parking lot. A small number of protesters of about 15 or 20 people were venting their anger against the Iranian government and sacrilege.
The small shopping plaza in which the sacrilege occurred is located at 6097 Yonge Street in Toronto. Because of a large number of Iranian-owned stores there, the plaza is called the “Iranian Plaza”.
The holy Quran had a Farsi translation and was printed in the Islamic Republic of Iran. An Afghan taxi driver, named Haroon, who came to buy bread, discovered the ripped pages and frantically began to pick them up from the ground.
He was extremely distressed by what he discovered and while picking up the pages of the holy book, he was joined by several storeowners many of whom know him personally.
He also reported the incident to the police but they showed little interest and took only perfunctory notes.
The Muslim community in Toronto is upset with such desecration. Community leaders have planned a meeting to chalk out a future course of action.
